Ear Keloids – Case Study 9 – Massive Ear Keloid:
This 23-year-old female presented to Dr. Tirgan in November 2013 with bilateral massive ear keloids. Her first keloid occurred at the age of five. Since then, she has had numerous treatments, including several attempts at surgical removal, steroid injections as well as radiation therapy to both her ears. Despite all these aggressive treatments, her ear keloids have relapsed to the point of losing hope and deciding to live with these huge tumoral keloid on both her ears. The images below depict the size of her ear keloids during her first visit with Dr. Tirgan.

Treatment with cryotherapy was chosen as the first step to reduce the mass of her keloids. The video depicts application of cryotherapy to her left ear.

With few cycles of cryotherapy, we were able to reduce the mass of these keloids. The images below show the interim outcomes. What is more noticeable is the extent of tissue losee in her right ear, which is the direst result of repeated surgical removal of her keloids.

Massive ear keloids require on going treatment. Quite often, as shown in this case, the extent of tissue loss from prior surgeries becomes evident only after the keloid mass is reduced.
Due to distance and travel difficulties, this patient returned to our practice three years later, in September 2017. Keloids on both sides had regrown, however, as shown below, both ears continue to have less keloids than when the patient first presented in June 2013.
